Gulaebaghavali is a vibrant heist-action comedy that thrives on energy, colour, and rhythm — a perfect canvas for experimenting with tone and texture. My vision as Director of Photography was to create a distinct visual language that balanced the film’s humour and action through bold lighting, vivid colour palettes, and dynamic movement. The challenge was to retain cinematic richness and consistency within a fast-paced shooting schedule.
We shot on the ARRI Alexa XT with Cooke S5/i primes, chosen for their warmth, contrast, and soft fall-off that complemented the film’s playful tone. The 2.39:1 Cinemascope frame gave space for ensemble choreography and comic timing. Lighting played a narrative role — tungsten warmth for comedy sequences and LED/HMI with gel control for cool-toned heist scenes — creating a rhythmic interplay of light and colour that reflected the film’s shifting moods.
Inspired by pulp comic art, I designed a palette of vibrant primaries and balanced saturation, preserving texture and tonal depth during DI. Movement styles varied with emotion: handheld for chase and fight scenes to heighten spontaneity, and gimbal or dolly for songs and drama to maintain elegance and flow.
Despite a tight 41-days schedule — 26 days for talkie portions, 7 days for songs, and 8 days for action — we maintained visual discipline through pre-lighting, LUT testing, and continuity setups . My goal was to make every frame feel alive — playful, textured, and in sync with the film’s pulse — ensuring that the visual design became an integral part of the story itself.
