Cauvery Calling

Documentary | Environmental Campaign

Cauvery Calling is a landmark environmental movement — the first of its kind in India — aimed at revitalizing the Cauvery River and restoring life to millions who depend on it. As the Director of Photography, my vision was to capture the emotional and ecological essence of this initiative: the living river, the farmers it nourishes, and the landscapes it sustains. The film’s purpose went beyond documentation — it was about portraying the soul of a river and the human connection that flows alongside it.

The shoot covered the entire stretch of the Cauvery, from its origin in the Western Ghats through Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, capturing the river’s journey through villages, farms, and forests. Traveling extensively with the director and the Isha Foundation team, I aimed to document both the grandeur and fragility of this ecosystem. Using the Sony FX7 camera, I focused on achieving clarity and realism in natural light conditions — adapting quickly to diverse terrains and weather without compromising image quality.

Cinematographically, my approach was rooted in observation and respect for nature’s rhythm. I relied entirely on available light, using the river’s reflections, early dawn mist, and golden-hour hues to convey emotion. Each frame was composed to balance scale and intimacy — from sweeping aerial perspectives of the river basin to close human portraits that reveal its social impact.

Through this project, I sought to merge documentary honesty with cinematic storytelling. Cauvery Calling remains one of my most meaningful works — a journey of light, landscape, and purpose — demonstrating how cinematography can play a vital role in environmental awareness and inspire collective responsibility toward nature’s lifelines.
