Shesha is a gritty crime thriller set across the shadowed landscapes of Kasaragod, Shivamogga, Bangalore, and Kerala. My vision as the Director of Photography was to create a high-contrast neo-noir visual tone that reflects the darkness of the story and the complexity of its characters. With nearly 95% of the film shot at night, I designed the lighting and composition to build suspense through shadows, reflections, and layered illumination — allowing light itself to reveal emotion and narrative depth.
The film was shot using the RED Gemini paired with ARRI Master Prime lenses, chosen for their superior low-light performance, clarity, and contrast control. This combination offered the flexibility to capture deep blacks and saturated highlights without compromising texture or detail. The overall visual style embraced bold contrasts, controlled saturation, and a palette inspired by urban neon — mixing cyan, magenta, and amber tones to give the imagery a stylized yet grounded realism.
Lighting design was deliberately minimal but purposeful. I used motivated sources such as headlights, sodium streetlights, neon signage, and window spill to construct visual layers while maintaining authenticity. Each frame was treated with precision — allowing hard rims, diffused fills, and reflective surfaces to build tension. The interplay of warm and cool tones defined the emotional temperature of the scenes, amplifying the psychological undercurrent of crime and betrayal.
For movement, I employed handheld and gimbal techniques to enhance immediacy during chase and confrontation sequences, and slow dolly moves for moments of introspection and suspense. Collaborating closely with the director and art team, I ensured that Shesha embodied a visually cohesive neo-noir aesthetic — one that blends realism with stylized lighting, transforming the night into a canvas of mystery, emotion, and cinematic rhythm.
